AI bookkeeping uses software to handle the repetitive parts of keeping your books: reading receipts, categorizing transactions, matching bank activity and chasing unpaid invoices. It can save hours of data entry every month. It does not replace an accountant for taxes, filings or financial advice.
Widely used by US small businesses and accountants. AI features help categorize transactions and create invoices and payment reminders.

Best for: Getting rid of the shoebox of receipts
Online services such as Pilot pair software with human bookkeepers who close your books each month.
Best for: Owners who want it done for them
General assistants are useful around your books, not inside them. Use them to explain accounting terms, write spreadsheet formulas, draft polite overdue-invoice emails, or spot patterns in an export you have stripped of account numbers and personal details. Do not treat their math as final without checking it, and do not upload full bank statements to a free consumer account.
AI can handle much of the data entry, categorizing and matching. Someone still needs to review it monthly, and an accountant should handle taxes and filings.
It is good at transactions that repeat, such as the same vendor every month. It is weaker on new vendors, mixed personal and business spending, and unusual items, which is why a monthly review matters.
The best choice is usually the software your accountant already works in, because they will review your books there. QuickBooks Online and Xero are both widely supported.
Use established accounting software, turn on two-factor authentication, and limit who has access. Keep sensitive financial files out of general chatbots.
